The North Penn Visiting Nurse Association’s Meals on Wheels program is looking for volunteers to pack or deliver meals to the elderly and infirmed. Meals are packed and delivered mornings, Monday through Friday. You can volunteer for as many days per week or month as you would like. Packaging meals requires approximately 2-1/2 hours of your time each day and involves making sandwiches, packaging food into individual serving containers and packing coolers with the meals. Delivering meals requires approximately 90 minutes of your time each day and involves loading coolers into your automobile and delivering a route of approximately 10 to 15 stops. The Meals on Wheels program is also in need of emergency, winter-weather volunteers to pack and deliver meals in bad weather. North Penn VNA is located at 51 Medical Campus Drive in Lansdale and delivers meals in the Lansdale, North Wales and Blue Bell areas. North Penn School District will host North Penn Jazz Night April 11 at 7 p.m. at Penndale Middle School, 400 Penn St., Lansdale.. The performing groups for this event include the Gwynedd Square-Inglewood Jazz Band, Pennbrook Jazz Band, Penndale Jazz Band, Penndale Jazz Choir, Pennfield Jazz Band, NPHS Jazz Ambassadors, NPHS Lab Band and the NPHS Jazz Band. The Lansdale Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society will present its 50th anniversary show in four-part harmony April 8 at 7:30 p.m. and April 9 at 2 p.m. at Branch Creek Church on Route 63, Harleysville. The theme of the “golden anniversary” show is “In an Old Barbershop Chair.” In addition to the musical performance of the award-winning chorus, special entertainment will be provided by guest quartet Escapade. The Mennonite Heritage Center, 565 Yoder Road, Harleysville announces a Rug Hook-In and Clinic on April 16 from 9 to 3:30 pm. The event will be led by members of the Hunterdon County Rug Artisans Guild, whose members work to encourage creativity and promote educational activities for rug hooking. The Lansdale Department of Parks and Recreation will be offering two workshops on “PYSANKY” (Ukrainian Easter Eggs). Learn how to create beautiful Easter Eggs using the interesting custom of Pysanky. Eggs are hand decorated using an ancient wax resist process which the Ukrainians have been using for centuries. The workshops will be held on April 9. The Indian Valley Family YMCA’s annual Tri-Kids will take place May 1 at the Harleysville YMCA, located at 890 Maple Ave. Participants are eligible at ages 7 to 14 years old. The schedule of events includes 8 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. race start and a ceremony to follow, where the top three male and female finishing participants receive an award. The Indian Valley Soap Box Association will be holding its annual All-American Soap Box Derby race down Main Street in Souderton June 4. It’s not too late to enter as a driver or to sponsor a soap box derby car. The North Penn YMCA’s LaCrest Center is offering two new programs that make exercising more fun: Bollywood Dance and Boxing. Bollywood Dance is an energetic, yet subtle dance format. The Y’s new Boxing Program employs a more traditional, yet dynamic approach to getting into shape. The class involves developing foot work, conditioning, and endurance, learning jab combinations, working with pads, speed bag, and heavy bag techniques. It teaches confidence, basic techniques, and both offense and defensive skills with no physical contact. Both programs are being held at the LaCrest Center, 624 E. North Penn Visiting Nurse Association still has flu (influenza) shots available. Shots are free for adults who use Medicare B as their primary health insurance. AMBUCS (American Business Clubs) is a national non-profit charitable association with a mission dedicated to creating independence for those with physical disabilities. The members of the Upper Gwynedd Chapter are involved in many projects within our community, including providing AmTrykes, therapeutic tricycles specially tailored to the needs of kids with disabilities, the construction of wheel chair ramps, and the design and construction of a local playground. The Friends of the Wissahickon and the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association are teaming up once again to clean the Wissahickon Creek from top to bottom April 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. This spring marks the 41st anniversary of Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association’s annual Creek Clean Up, and the second year that FOW has teamed up with WVWA. Volunteers of all ages will clean the creek, the surrounding trails and the many tributaries of the Wissahickon Creek. Armed with bags, volunteers will be assigned to sections of the creek. Following the clean up, all volunteers are invited to WVWA’s Talkin’ Trash picnic in Fort Washington State Park, with food provided by Whole Foods Market of North Wales. The pavilion is located on Mill Road in Flourtown. To help out in Montgomery County, all volunteers must be pre-assigned a section of the Wissahickon Creek to clean. The North Penn Visiting Nurse Association’s Meals on Wheels program is looking for volunteers to pack or deliver meals to the elderly and infirmed. Packaging meals requires approximately 2-1/2 hours of your time each day and involves making sandwiches, packaging food into individual serving containers and packing coolers with the meals. Delivering meals requires approximately 90 minutes of your time each day and involves loading coolers into your automobile and delivering a route of approximately 10 to 15 stops. The Meals on Wheels program is also in need of emergency, winter-weather volunteers to pack and deliver meals in bad weather. The Friends of the Wissahickon and the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association are teaming up once again to clean the Wissahickon Creek from top to bottom April 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. This spring marks the 41st anniversary of Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association’s annual Creek Clean Up, and the second year that FOW has teamed up with WVWA. Volunteers of all ages will clean the creek, the surrounding trails and the many tributaries of the Wissahickon Creek. Armed with bags, volunteers will be assigned to sections of the creek. Following the clean up, all volunteers are invited to WVWA’s Talkin’ Trash picnic in Fort Washington State Park, with food provided by Whole Foods Market of North Wales. Hatfield Township’s second annual Five & Dime Run and Walk will be held April 10. Registration is being accepted for 5- and 10-miles courses, a 5-mile walk, a 1-mile fitness walk and a half-mile children’s race. The North Penn School District al Foundation invites families and community members to its Silent Auction and Luau April 10 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. The Silent Auction and Luau will be held at PineCrest Country Club, 101 Country Club Drive, Lansdale. Upper Gwynedd Fire Department is looking for Volunteers – While it may surprise you to learn that fire protection is provided in Upper Gwynedd by 50 volunteers who receive no compensation at all, this is the norm, not the exception. Approximately 97 percent of the fire companies in the Commonwealth are volunteer. We are looking for firefighters, quick response medical personnel, junior firefighers, special fire police, and active members that can help at fundraisers and take care of administrative duties. The Independent Adults with Neuro-Muscular Diseases (IAND) support group assists those with Parkinson’s disease, MS and all neuro-muscular disorders.
